On Thursday, November 9, the United Nations released it’s annual Human Development Index. The HDI is a “comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, and standards of living for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare” (emphasis mine). The United States is ranked number 8, after (in descending order) Norway, Iceland, Australia, Ireland, Sweden, Canada, and Japan. Last on the list at 177 is Niger.
The Russian Federation is ranked number 65 with Belarus at 67 and Ukraine at 77. Knowing that Russian women are very protective of their children, it’s easy to understand why a woman in Russia that has or wants to have children would try to live where her children could best thrive.
