Ded Moros, Grandfather Frost, is still active in Russian life during this season. As I wrote in my December 22,2006 post, today is New Year’s eve for those Russians choosing to celebrate according to the Julian calendar in effect before the 1917 revolution. Actually this means most Russians because it’s an excuse to celebrate. There will not be the fireworks, vodka, and dancing in the streets kind of parties that took place on December 31. Rather, it’s an occasion for families to get together for a feast consisting of many specialty dishes. Well o.k., there will be some vodka and probably some dancing and singing too. It’s party time!

So if you’re living with or around Russian people, be sure to express “Happy New Year” to them.

My best to you, and have a Great year. Until next time,

Gary.
