Hello from Gary;
Statistically, the success rate of marriages between American men and foreign women is roughly 80%. This contrasts sharply with the success rate of 50% for marriages between American men and American women.
So that’s good news, right men? Now I’m not a sociologist or a psychologist, but I have my own theories, born of experience, of why marriages to foreign women are more successful.
In a nutshell, I believe it’s largely because foreign women, and particularly Russian women, are very much content with playing their role as women and letting men be men. They require honesty, respect, fairness, and like all women, demonstrations of love. But they have zero interest in competing with men where worldly issues are involved.
And too, your concern for her welfare and thoughtfulness in regards to cultural differences are appreciated (and rewarded). There’s a completely separate category on our blog here called “help her adjust” to illustrate some ideas about this.
But still, there’s that 20% of American men/foreign women marriages that fail. Some fail early on. Others fail after years of being together. I suspect that the ones that fail early on are because of cultural issues and men not providing adequate adjustment help for their foreign brides.
And it’s the early failures, those marriages that fall apart before the woman has received her permanent green card to stay in America, where a tragic mistake is often made.
It’s true that for your foreign fiancee to stay in America, you two have to be married within 90 days of her entry to America on a K-1 visa. If you’re not married within 90 days, she has to leave the country. PERIOD.
BUT it’s NOT TRUE that to stay in America she has to stay married to you. It’s very possible that if you two divorce, she may want to return to her native land. But in truth, she may actually want to stay in America and eventually become a naturalized citizen, even though you and she have divorced.
This is not an issue once she has her permanent green card. But if you divorce or have your marriage annulled BEFORE she has a permanent green card, immigration law provides an option for her to stay in America if she desires to. Here’s how:
Permanent residency (the much coveted Green Card) through marriage is obtained by filing form I-751 (Petition To Remove Conditions Of Residence).
In part 2 of the form (Basis For Petition) there is a choice of options to select. One of those options states:
“I entered into the marriage in good faith but the marriage was terminated through divorce or annulment.”
You can check it out here - -

Through use of this option, your now ex foreign bride has the opportunity to stay in America if that’s her choice.
So men, if your marriage to your foreign bride does not work out, at least be gracious enough to inform her that she has options. You brought her here from half way around the world. Don’t just do the old “send her back” routine if things don’t work out. You will incur some responsibility by treating her with dignity, and I’ll write about that in a future post. But on the other hand, if she came here “in good faith” it behooves you as a man to treat her with dignity, yes?
That’s all for now.
All The Best Of Life To You,
Gary.
P.S. Remember men: if you want your “dream girl”, it’s like baseball - - to hit a home run you have to swing the bat. Yes a little “cheesy” I know, but think about it - no risk = no reward.
